The story of Holy Week in Alghero dates back to 1600, when the center was still a Spanish stronghold: the ship Santa Maria di Montenero to Genoa was shipwrecked in the Gulf of Porto Conte after a heavy storm. The wooden Christ of Alicante that the ship was carrying came ashore on the waves of the sea.
